Overview

Baker Botts is widely recognized for its multistate tax controversy practice. We represent clients in audits, redetermination hearings and litigation throughout the U.S. Our state tax lawyers team with our seasoned appellate lawyers to provide an appellate tax practice. We also represent clients in “nontraditional” controversies, including managed audits, Multistate Tax Commission audits, voluntary disclosure, unclaimed property audits and reversing adverse policies of tax agencies.

Our controversy and litigation services include:

Audit:

Our lawyers represent clients in all stages of audits, including preparing audit strategies, identifying and preserving privilege, coordinating efforts of in-house staff, accountants, and other professionals and guiding auditors to the right legal conclusions

Administrative Hearings:

Our lawyers are particularly experienced at resolving controversies at the administrative level, saving clients the time and cost of litigation; we provide these services throughout the U.S., and have argued cases before administrative law judges in several states

Litigation:

Our lawyers have litigated substantial tax controversies in Texas and other states and have a robust network of local counsel to assist wherever our clients have needs

Other Services:

Our lawyers are known to help companies resolve tax liabilities through managed audits, amnesty programs and voluntary disclosure agreements; we also help our clients avoid controversies by informally challenging adverse tax policies
