Baker Botts has been advising on major energy and infrastructure projects in Africa since the early 1970s. We have represented government entities (including NOC’s), sponsors, developers, investors, venture partners, commercial lenders, export credit agencies and multilateral lending institutions on the development and financing of major upstream oil and gas, power, mining, LNG and telecommunications projects in over 30 countries across the African continent.

Our Africa energy and projects team is primarily located in our London, Dubai and Riyadh offices, and we service clients in relation to the development of energy projects in Africa, upstream oil & gas M&A in Africa, the supply of energy (in any form) to Africa, and the sale of energy (in any form) from the African continent.

Energy Sector
Our Africa practitioners represent clients in Anglophone, Francophone and Lusophone Africa, and whilst we practice broadly in the energy space (including mining) our core experience in Africa is in upstream oil & gas acquisitions, divestments, and project development (LNG project development, cross-border pipeline project development, and power project development and financing).

We have extensive knowledge of Africa’s local and regional legal systems and treaties (including OHADA, ECOWAS, CEMAC and UEMOA) together with knowledge on investment in Africa, local culture and business practice. Our experience in Africa includes advising on projects that are positively changing the landscape of the regions involved.

Infrastructure Projects
We also lead on work for clients on high-end and complex matters within the Telecoms industry across Africa. This is reflective of Baker Botts’ leading infrastructure project practice, where have specific experience in digital infrastructure projects. Our client base comprises the full range of companies and institutions within the sector, from large media conglomerates to global telecommunications providers, equipment providers, emerging technology companies and banks/infrastructure funds involved in projects throughout Africa.
