Baker Botts Continues California Expansion with Return of VC and Growth Capital Partner Brian Lee

Release

PALO ALTO, November 5, 2025 – Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international energy, technology, and life sciences law firm, has added veteran corporate partner Brian Lee to its Palo Alto office, bringing a unique combination of law firm leadership experience and hands-on venture capital and growth investment perspective to the Firm's corporate and emerging companies/venture capital (ECVC) practices domestically and internationally.

Lee rejoins Baker Botts from BRV Capital, a global venture capital and growth capital fund with more than $6.5 billion in assets under management, where he served as managing director, sourcing investments in high-growth technology companies. At BRV Capital, Lee also advised portfolio companies on market and capital strategies, M&A opportunities, and operational challenges.

Lee’s arrival continues Baker Botts' momentum in California, where the Firm recently expanded its San Francisco office in October with a prominent transactional tax team from Venable led by Friedemann Thomma and Becca Chappell. Earlier this year, former federal prosecutor Matt Jacobs joined in San Francisco to chair the Firm’s California litigation practice. So far in 2025, Baker Botts has welcomed a record number of lateral partners firmwide, strengthening its capabilities across key markets and priority practice areas worldwide.

During his previous 13-year tenure at Baker Botts, Lee built a corporate practice focused on high-stakes mergers and acquisitions, venture financings, and company representation across the technology sector. He held key leadership roles, including firmwide deputy corporate department chair and Palo Alto office partner-in-charge, and he played a pivotal role in establishing Baker Botts’ partnerships with Capital Factory and The Ion, innovation hubs that connect the Firm with emerging technology companies and entrepreneurial ecosystems in Texas.

Baker Botts has maintained a robust presence in California for nearly 20 years, serving technology leaders across software, semiconductors, telecommunications, biotech, and other high-growth sectors. The Firm's Technology Department includes more than 200 dedicated global technology lawyers operating across Silicon Valley, New York, London, Washington, D.C., Asia, the Middle East, and Texas.

"Brian left as a law firm leader and comes back to Baker Botts having lived in the venture and growth capital world. Our clients get the rare combination of both experiences in one lawyer,” Managing Partner Danny David said. “He’s guided companies through growth and knows what venture investors in California and beyond are looking for because he's been one.”

“Brian’s international perspective and investor-side insight will help us deliver seamless, strategic counsel to technology clients on the West Coast and around the world,” said firmwide Technology Chair Jonathan Gordon. “His track record in high-impact deals and his understanding of the innovation economy align with our strategy to provide comprehensive support for technology clients in California and beyond.”

“I’m excited to rejoin Baker Botts and collaborate with colleagues across our growing California offices,” said Brian Lee. “I’ve watched the Firm continue to grow its reach, and the entrepreneurial culture I remember never left. I’m thrilled to work alongside a team that understands how to help clients execute on ambitious visions while managing risk and complexity.”
