Kathleen Fox Murphy is highly experienced in multi-jurisdictional patent litigation and patent strategy having acted in some of the most high-profile patent disputes of the last 25 years. She has been recommended as a leading patent litigator by ManagingIP (2026), IAM Patent 1000 (2026), JUVE Patent UK Rankings (2025), and WIPR (2024) including recognition as “a major authority in the FRAND/SEP space” (IAM Patent 1000, 2023).

She has advised clients across a variety of industry sectors, substantially in the pharma/biotech, telecoms, electronics, IT, engineering and chemical industries, on infringement and validity litigation, including interim injunctions, in the UK High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court and often involving multi-jurisdictional litigation strategies and co-ordination.

Kathleen has advised biotech/pharma and medical device companies throughout her career, in relation to large and small molecule drugs, including SPC aspects, and regulatory issues affecting pharmaceutical companies, including significant experience and success in respect of interim injunctions, calculation and recovery of damages and costs recovery.

She advises on multi-jurisdictional litigation strategies in the tech sector in respect of SEPs and non-SEPs to achieve licensing objectives, including deep strategic experience covering Unified Patents Court (UPC) proceedings and German regional courts and the interplay with UK proceedings as well as the interplay with U.S. proceedings.

Her work in the telecoms, IT and electronics sectors has concerned patents for various aspects of 3G, 4G and 5G technologies such as speech coding, radio control link and downlink control channel signalling as well as H264 and H265 video codecs, and content distribution networks, encrypted email, bank card security, optics and semi-conductors.

She also advises on the contractual and competition law issues arising in UK and/or Europe from (i) behaviour of SEP licensors/licensees under IPR policies of SSOs and (ii) patent prosecution or licensing in respect of pharma/biotech products.
