Baker Botts Strengthens Transatlantic Disputes Practices with Hires in London and Washington
WASHINGTON and LONDON, August 3, 2026 — Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international energy, technology, and life sciences law firm, has added two experienced litigators to its disputes practices on both sides of the Atlantic. Environmental trial lawyer Nash Long joins the Firm as a partner in Washington, D.C., while patent litigator Kathleen Fox Murphy joins as a partner in London.
Long and Fox Murphy handle complex disputes for companies in highly regulated and technically sophisticated industries. Long represents energy and industrial companies in environmental enforcement actions, regulatory challenges, toxic tort cases, and commercial disputes. Fox Murphy represents life sciences and technology companies in multi-jurisdictional patent litigation, including disputes involving standard essential patents, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical devices.
Long, who joins Baker Botts from Hunton Andrews Kurth, has more than 20 years of experience leading trials, arbitrations, enforcement proceedings, and appellate challenges nationwide. He defends energy companies in actions under the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and challenges agency rulemaking before federal appellate courts. He also serves as first-chair counsel in toxic tort, class action, and commercial litigation and has represented clients in matters involving billions of dollars in dispute across the country.
In addition to his client work, Long recently became Chair-Elect of the American Bar Association’s Litigation Section following a term as Vice Chair and edited the ABA-published book, Trying Your First Case: A Practitioner’s Guide.
Fox Murphy joins Baker Botts from EIP and brings more than 25 years of experience in patent litigation spanning the life sciences and technology sectors. She has represented clients before the UK High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court, as well as assisting clients in navigating proceedings before the Unified Patent Court, which has become an increasingly consequential forum for European patent litigation. Her practice includes infringement and validity disputes, interim injunctions, multi-jurisdictional litigation strategy, and competition law issues involving standard essential patents (SEPs) and fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing.
Her work spans pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, telecommunications and information technology. Fox Murphy has been named a Patent Star by IP Stars and a WIPR Leader and has been recommended by IAM Patent 1000 and JUVE Patent UK.
“Companies in our core industries are managing disputes that increasingly combine technical subject matter, regulatory scrutiny, and significant commercial consequences,” said Managing Partner Danny David. “Nash and Kathleen have experience doing that work in two of the world’s major legal markets. Their arrival reflects where we see client needs growing and the kind of experienced advocates we want leading those matters.”
“Nash understands how decisions made during an agency proceeding or enforcement action can shape the litigation that follows,” said Litigation Department Chair Bridget Moore. “He brings the judgment of a trial lawyer and the command of environmental law needed to lead major disputes for clients in highly regulated industries.”
“Kathleen is a highly regarded patent litigator whose experience across technology and life sciences is a significant addition to our global team,” said Christa Brown-Sanford, IP Department Chair. “Her command of UK and European patent proceedings, particularly in SEP and FRAND matters and interim injunctions, expands the experience we can bring to clients facing complex disputes.”
“Baker Botts understands the industries at the center of my practice and has the national reach to support clients wherever a dispute develops,” Long said. “Here the regulatory strategy and the trial strategy get built together, by people who have done both. That is the practice I wanted to join, and it is the work I have built my career around.”
“Baker Botts brings together the industry knowledge, technical experience, and international coordination that complex patent disputes now demand,” Fox Murphy said. “Its strengths in life sciences and technology closely match my practice, and I look forward to helping clients manage disputes across the UK, Europe, and other major markets.”
