Baker Botts Wins International Arbitration Team of the Year at Legal Business Awards For Its Victory on Behalf of the Republic of Iraq

LONDON, 20 September 2023 – Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international law firm, has been named International Arbitration Team of the Year at the Legal Business Awards, an annual event honouring the profession’s leading practitioners. This year’s event took place on 19 September 2023.

The team received the accolade for its work defending the Republic of Iraq in a $1 billion investment treaty arbitration brought by German transport company AHG Industry GmbH & Co. KG at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Baker Botts obtained a summary dismissal of all of the investor’s claims and thereby secured an early release for Iraq from the case, saving it from having to argue a full case on jurisdiction and the merits.

The Baker Botts London team comprised Partner Dorine Farah, Partner Alejandro Escobar, Special Counsel David Turner and paralegal Olga Zujeva.

“We are delighted to have achieved this recognition for our work with the Republic of Iraq,” says Dorine Farah. “Winning this award is a great testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. We greatly value the trust placed by Iraq and all of our clients in our ability to apply our strategic insight to secure the best outcome in their disputes, which in this case has saved very significant time and expense for Iraq and its citizens.”

The formal case citation is AHG Industry GmbH & Co. KG v. Republic of Iraq, ICSID Case No. ARB/20/21. A copy of the Award may be accessed here.
