Baker Botts to Receive Voices of Courage Award from Women's Refugee Commission
HOUSTON, March 28, 2022 – Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international energy, technology and life sciences law firm, is pleased to announce that the firm will receive the Voices of Courage Corporate Award from the Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) at its annual luncheon on May 3 in New York. The event will celebrate the courage and resilience of refugee women and the 2022 Voices of Courage honorees. Past corporate awardees have included Airbnb, Chobani, Mastercard and Indra Nooyi.
Baker Botts will be the sole corporate award recipient, in recognition of its extensive pro bono work on behalf of women and youth refugees. The firm’s work includes applications for humanitarian parole on behalf of Afghan women judges and their families, in partnership with the Aleph Institute and the International Association of Women Judges; assisting American Gateways, one of the largest immigration legal services providers in Texas, in connection with proposed regulations that impact refugee populations; and handling dozens of individual pro bono immigration and refugee cases, among other matters.
“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition from WRC,” said Baker Botts Managing Partner John Martin. “We take seriously our moral obligation to provide those most in need with legal assistance they cannot afford, and we handle such matters with the same zealous advocacy as we do for our fee-paying clients. Immigration and refugee issues are as important as ever, and we are proud to stand alongside WRC in its steadfast dedication to the human and legal rights of refugees around the world.”
On May 3, 2022, some 400-500 leaders in business, humanitarian organizations, and philanthropy will gather at Cipriani 42nd Street for the Voices of Courage Awards luncheon. Liv Ullmann, co-founder and honorary chair of the Women’s Refugee Commission and Golden Globe-winning and Oscar-nominated actress and director, will be the awards presenter. Jessica Bruder, journalist and author of Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century, which was adapted into the Oscar-winning film, will moderate a discussion with the refugee honorees. In addition, there will be a musical performance by Gaby Moreno, Grammy- and Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter-producer and winner of a Latin Grammy for best new artist. In recognition of their leadership of the firm’s immigration and refugee pro bono program, Washington special counsel, Lee Davis, and Austin senior associate, Maddy Dwertman, will accept the Voices of Courage Award on behalf of the firm.
Firm clients or others who wish to attend the award ceremony, or otherwise support WRC, can contact their firm relationship partner or Washington Corporate Partner and Voices of Courage Host Committee Member, Brendan Dignan, at [email protected].
