In late July, President Donald Trump announced the conclusion of trade deals with Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, the European Union, Korea and Pakistan — on top of earlier announced deals with Vietnam and the United Kingdom.

The conclusion of trade deals with these major economies after mere weeks of negotiations is nothing short of a miracle, which naturally raises questions.

Are these, in fact, deals that have been crafted to form durable foundations for long-term economic and commercial relations between the U.S. and its trading partners? Or, are they ephemeral arrangements that are vulnerable to collapse upon an interpretive disagreement, a change in political will or other provocation?
