Overview

Nicolaus Neser is an Antitrust and Competition Law Associate in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

His practice focuses on merger clearance, counseling, compliance, and antitrust litigation. He regularly practices before the Department of Justice--where he previously worked as a paralegal in the Antitrust Division's Technology and Digital Platforms Section--and the Federal Trade Commission. Nicolaus has assisted clients through complex and vigorously challenged transactions. Nicolaus also advises clients on the integration of AI tools into antitrust and M&A workflows.

While in law school, Nicolaus served as the Executive Administrative Editor of The Georgetown Law Journal. Additionally, he worked as a judicial intern for the Honorable Richard J. Leon at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and a law clerk for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Competition Policy, Antitrust and Consumer Rights.

  • Representing UnitedHealth Group in its successful acquisition of Amedisys, a US$3.3 billion transaction recognized by Global Competition Review in 2026 as the "Merger Control Matter of the Year (Americas)."
  • Representing UnitedHealth Group in various strategic acquisitions, joint ventures, and other long-term business relationships.
  • Representing the acquirer of a multi-state, multi-specialty physician practice; transaction successfully closed following a Second Request vertical investigation.
  • Representing a large hospital system in the acquisition of competing hospitals and other providers involving in-depth merger reviews.
  • Advising clients on the integration of AI tools into antitrust and M&A workflows, including AI-assisted research, large-scale document analysis, drafting of advocacy materials, and the development of tailored antitrust agents for high-volume regulatory workstreams.
