Ernesto is an experienced practitioner in public international law, in commercial arbitration and in construction arbitration, with a focus on Latin American disputes. He has been recognized as a “Rising Star” (Legal 500 UK, Public International Law, 2022-2023) and as “One to Watch” (Best Lawyers UK, Administrative and Public Law, 2023). Latin Lawyer 250 (2023) recently highlighted Ernesto. He is Civil-Law trained, with a doctorate in public international law from the University of Oxford.

Our clients consider Ernesto “a great lawyer” (Legal 500 UK 2022). He has acted as counsel for private sector clients, for State-owned companies and for sovereign States in institutional and in ad hoc arbitrations (ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC and CAM Santiago). He has also provided advice to our clients on the international and domestic legal protections available for transnational investments, on construction law and on numerous areas of public international law, such as maritime delimitation issues, the law of the sea, the law of state responsibility, the law of treaties and international humanitarian law.

Prior to joining Baker Botts in 2014, Ernesto was an associate at an international law and international arbitration boutique law firm in London. He was also a Judicial Fellow/University Trainee (2010-2011) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), in The Hague, where he clerked for Judges Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf and Sir Christopher Greenwood.

Ernesto practices fully bilingually in Spanish and in English and is fluent in French.
