Overview

Katie Chung is an international disputes and arbitration lawyer based in Singapore.

With nearly 20 years’ experience, Katie advises and represents clients in Asia-related complex international arbitrations conducted under all major arbitration rules. These multi-jurisdictional disputes often involve a wide range of applicable laws and parallel satellite litigations.

Katie has extensive contentious experience across a broad spectrum of industries, including aviation, energy (oil and gas, renewable energy and power), commodities, financial institutions, FMCG, infrastructure, digital infrastructure, telecoms, technology, private equity and cryptocurrency. She also regularly advises clients on investment protections and potential claims under bilateral or multi-lateral investment treaties.

Apart from acting as lead counsel in international arbitrations, Katie regularly sits as an arbitrator, having accepted appointments as sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator and presiding arbitrator in institutional arbitrations seated in Singapore or Hong Kong under the ICC, SIAC or HKIAC Rules.

Katie is a Delegate of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, a member of the AAA-ICDR Singapore Committee and a member of the executive committee of the Asia-Pacific Forum for International Arbitration. She is also a member of the IBA Task Force on “The Nationality of the Arbitrator as a Proxy for Independence and Impartiality”, and a member of the Singapore Branch of the International Law Association. Katie regularly publishes and speaks on international arbitration.

Experience

  • Representing an Asian incorporated joint venture company in a London-seated LCIA arbitration concerning disputes arising out of a Malaysian law governed contract for the industrial supply of nitrogen and oxygen. Claims in excess of USD 287 million.
  • Representing an international energy company in Singapore-seated SIAC arbitrations concerning disputes against an Asian contractor arising out of English law governed contracts for the construction of offshore upstream assets in an Asian state. Claims in excess of USD 150 million. Advised in parallel reorganization and recognition proceedings under the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency as brought into force in Singapore law.
  • Representing a global brewery group in consolidated Singapore seated SIAC arbitrations concerning disputes against a minority shareholder arising out of a Singapore law governed shareholders’ agreement. Claims in excess of USD 1 billion.
  • Represented an international energy company and its Asian co-venturers against a European contractor in a Mumbai-seated LCIA arbitration concerning disputes arising out of an English law governed contract for decommissioning of offshore oil & gas assets in India. Claims in excess of USD 100 million.
  • Represented an Asian upstream oil & gas company as co-claimant in an ad hoc arbitration seated in Zurich, Switzerland, concerning disputes arising out of long-term concession agreements governed by international law and local law for the development of offshore oil & gas fields against an Asian government. Claims valued at over USD 2 billion.
  • Represented a mobile and data network operator in Asia against a tower company in a dispute arising out of a Singapore law governed service agreement for the long term colocation lease of mobile towers in Singapore-seated SIAC arbitration under the Expedited Procedure. Claims in excess of USD 22 million.
  • Represented a global commodities trader in multiple arbitration proceedings and SIAC emergency arbitrations seated in Singapore in Singapore law governed quality disputes against an upstream supplier of marine fuel oil. Claims in excess of USD 100 million. Also acted in related Singapore court proceedings for interim relief in support of these arbitrations (with local counsel) and acted against the downstream buyer in related disputes.
  • Represented a leading US-headquartered confectionery product manufacturer in a Singapore seated SIAC arbitration against one of its Southeast Asian distributors concerning disputes arising out of a Philippine law governed distributorship agreement. Claims in excess of USD 9 million.
  • Represented a leading Southeast Asian independent power producer against the Bangladesh Government in an ICSID arbitration relating to disputes over the pricing mechanism in a Bangladesh law governed long-term power purchase agreement and advised on enforcement proceedings for the ICSID award and related ICC awards.
