Lance J. Goodman is a senior associate in Baker Botts’ Intellectual Property practice, where his work spans patent litigation, prosecution, and client counseling in the electrical engineering, computer engineering, and electronics fields. Mr. Goodman represents clients on both the plaintiff and defendant sides before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), the International Trade Commission (ITC), and federal district courts, including the Eastern, Northern, and Western Districts of Texas, the Northern District of California, and the District of Delaware. He also counsels clients, from startups to large enterprises, on patent prosecution strategy tailored to their particular business needs.
Mr. Goodman has been a core technical member of teams that have successfully asserted patents at trial, defended patent owners before the PTAB, defended large corporations against infringement claims, and invalidated patents as a petitioner before the PTAB. His PTAB experience includes proceedings directed to display circuits, DRAM memory devices, and software-based systems. Most recently, Mr. Goodman served as the lead technical associate on a trial team that secured a victory in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware in a matter involving media streaming technology. He has also guided clients through a range of pre-litigation matters, mitigating business risk through thoughtful, strategic processes that avoided litigation altogether.
On the prosecution side, Mr. Goodman has significant experience drafting and prosecuting patents across the medical device, imaging, financial technology, networking, electro-mechanical, memory device, and artificial intelligence (AI) industries. His prosecution work includes patents directed to power electronics and power delivery technologies, such as circuits used to support and optimize power converter topologies across a range of electronic devices, including microphones and displays. Mr. Goodman has also drafted and prosecuted patents on high-performance capacitors used in power conversion to enable high-density power delivery and stability.
Prior to joining Baker Botts, Mr. Goodman was a patent associate at a large international law firm, where he prosecuted patents both domestically and in foreign jurisdictions, conducted infringement and invalidity analyses, and defended against offensive patent actions.
Mr. Goodman holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, where he studied thin-film technologies and metamaterials at the graduate level. His engineering background has proven invaluable across a wide range of technologies, including advanced data analysis systems (enterprise software-as-a-service (SaaS) platforms), flight control technologies (drones and helicopters), Internet of Things (IoT) systems (surveillance processing and recognition systems), media streaming protocols and implementations (including standards-essential patents (SEPs)), networking systems, and semiconductor designs and operations.
