Overview

Afzaal Abidi is an associate in the Global Projects practice, based in the firm's London office. He advises clients on mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures and project development across the energy and infrastructure sectors.

Afzaal has experience advising IOCs and NOCs, midstream developers, project developers and financial investors on complex, high-value transactions and projects spanning the energy value chain, including upstream oil and gas, LNG, refineries and petrochemical facilities and energy transition and clean technologies.

Experience

  • Equinor (formerly Statoil) on the sale of its Nigerian subsidiary, including its share in the giant Agbami oil field (Nigeria's largest deep-water field), to Chappal Energies for a total value of up to $1.2 billion, including a purchase price of $710 million and additional contingent payments. The landmark deal marked Equinor’s complete exit from Nigeria*
  • Affiliates of Global Infrastructure Partners in the acquisition of a 50 percent interest in the multi-billion dollar South Fork and Revolution Offshore Wind Projects off the East coast of the United States from Eversource Energy, including the negotiation of the joint venture arrangements with Orsted for the construction and operation of the projects (IJInvestor Joint Venture of the Year, 2024)*
  • Funds managed by Apollo in the $2 billion sale by New Fortress Energy Inc. of 11 LNG infrastructure vessels to a newly formed venture owned approximately 80% by Apollo funds and 20% by NFE*
  • Gulf Coast Ammonia as project counsel in the development of a world-scale ammonia project in Texas, including the negotiation of long term offtake agreements*
  • Infinium in the development of a power-to-liquids eFuels facility in Texas that will convert waste carbon dioxide and green hydrogen into sustainable aviation fuel and other low carbon fuels, and in its $75 million project equity investment commitment from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst*
  • Apollo Global Management in the acquisition of a majority stake in OEG Energy Group, a leading offshore energy solutions business, with an implied headline valuation of more than $1 billion for OEG*
  • ShaMaran Petroleum Corp. on the signed acquisition of 100% of the shares of TEPKRI Sarsang A/S, the holder of an 18% participating interest in the Sarsang Block located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, from TotalEnergies for a potential total value of $170 million*
  • OnCorp on all aspects of the structuring and project development of an LNG storage and regasification terminal to be located at the Port of Suape, Brazil*
  • Energy Transfer in all aspects of the Lake Charles LNG Project with a liquefaction capacity of 16.45 mtpa*
  • KKR in connection with the investment, alongside OTPP, in Caruna Oy, Finland’s largest electricity distribution company. The transaction, which represented the second deal undertaken under KKR's core infrastructure strategy, involved the acquisition of First Sentier Investors’ 40% stake in Caruna Oy as well as the separate acquisition of OMERS’ 40% stake.*
  • Brookfield Renewable Power in its investment of up to $500 million in California Bioenergy, a leading developer of dairy digesters for generating renewable vehicle fuel and electricity*
  • The project company on the EPC contracting and project development of a rubber production facility in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia*
  • Uzbekistan GTL on the construction, development and financing of a $3.6 billion gas to liquids project in the Kashkadarya Region, close to Karshi, in the Republic of Uzbekistan. This project is financed by or under the cover of several export credit agencies, development banks and commercial banks, including China Development Bank, KEXIM and KSure*
  • STAR Rafineri A.Ş. a subsidiary of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and its sponsors on the development and financing of a $6.3 billion greenfield oil refinery in Turkey on the Aegean Sea. This is the largest project financing in Turkey and involves the largest and most diverse group of ECAs for any multi-source financing in Turkey to date. The STAR project sets new benchmarks for project financings in Turkey in terms of amount and tenor of facilities. The Project won 10 awards including Infrastructure Journal's "European Oil and Gas Deal of the Year" for 2014*
