Bill Kroger Receives Houston Bar Foundation’s Highest Honor, the James B. Sales Pro Bono Leadership Award
HOUSTON, February 15, 2022 – Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international law firm, is pleased to announce that partner Bill Kroger has received the James. B. Sales Pro Bono Leadership Award from the Houston Bar Foundation. It is the organization’s highest honor.
The Houston Bar Foundation was established in 1982 as the charitable arm of the Houston Bar Association. Since that time, the Foundation has supported programs that help provide legal representation to the indigent, promote community understanding of our legal system and foster the administration of justice.
Kroger, who has chaired Baker Botts’ Energy Litigation group since 2008, is one of the leaders of the Houston legal community. He was elected as President of the Houston Bar Association for the 2020-21 bar year, which coincided with the 150th Anniversary of the HBA. In 2020, the Anti-Defamation League awarded him its Karen H. Susman Jurisprudence Award for his dedication to the legal profession, legal history, and service to the Houston community.
In addition, he has chaired or led Houston Volunteer Lawyers, the Dispute Resolution Committee, Houston Lawyers Referral Services, and the Houston Bar Foundation, among other organizations. He has also served as a director of the State Bar of Texas. In 2017, Kroger was elected by his peers to the American Law Institute. In 2015, he received the Leon Jaworski Award from the Houston Bar Association Auxiliary for a lifetime of public service.
Kroger also serves as General Counsel of the Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts, and on the Board of Directors of Communities in Schools Houston and The Alley Theatre.
Kroger is also one of the leading energy litigation lawyers in the United States. He is one of only a few lawyers who Chambers USA has ranked Band 1 for “Oil and Gas Litigation - Nationwide” (2020 and 2021).
The James. B. Sales Pro Bono Leadership Award was presented at the Houston Bar Foundation’s annual luncheon on February 15. In addition to Kroger’s award, Baker Botts tax partner Keri Brown, who serves as Partner-in-Charge of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility, earned the award for “Outstanding Pro Bono Coordinator Contribution to Houston Volunteer Lawyers.”
