Competition, State Aid and New Regulatory Initiatives: The EU’s Toolbox for the New Energy Market Design

On 21 May, 2019, Baker Botts Partner Matthew Levitt and Special Advisor Dr. Leigh Hancher will be speaking at the University of Oslo on Energy Market Design. The seminar will cover the most recent developments in case law, Commission practice and new legislative acts with influence on the shaping of energy market design in the EU.

Matthew Levitt's practice focuses on EU competition law, including EU and international cartel investigations and multi-jurisdictional merger filings. Matthew has extensive experience in the energy and natural resources sector, and has worked on landmark UK and EU competition issues, including the Norwegian gas (GFU) case, the Nord Pool/EPEX power exchange case, the international roll-on roll-off shipping cartel and the EU price signaling case.
Matthew will be speaking on current competition law issues including:

  1. Transparency and information exchange
  2. International merger control
  3. Compliance and JVs

Dr. Leigh Hancher has recently joined Baker Botts, and brings her experience on European regulatory and competition law. Leigh Hancher has acted as an advisor on the impact of European regulatory and competition law on the Norwegian energy market over several decades. She has advised on regulatory and competition issues relating to many high profile interconnection projects, renewable energy support schemes, gas tariffs and hydro-concessions as well as unbundling issues.
