The COVID-19 pandemic is having far-reaching implications on many aspects of our lives – including where we work. As offices and other organizations across the country have closed, Steve Solow has found a way to make remote “work.”
How has the transition been to working at home? What have you noticed has been harder/easier?
Having spent the past several years on the road for work, usually half or more of each month, the transition to remote work was easier than I had anticipated.
Do you have any new 'co-workers' (roommates, partners, children, pets)?
Our middle daughter, aged 27, moved in as the closures started, along with Frank her dog. So now we are three adults, two dogs, and two cats.
Tell us about your new office space – what do you like better, or is there anything you miss?
I have a desk in the attic of our DC house. It looks out on our street, which has come to resemble a pre-automobile city street – there is a parade of families, couples, dog walkers, kids on bikes, adults on bikes, adults on bike with kids on the bike, and so forth. I've also been able to watch spring as it emerged in the trees and plants on our street. I miss walking down a corridor to talk with colleagues.
If you've taken on an 'teaching' role for your kids – what are some tips that have worked for you?
My children are all adults. They have taken on the 'teaching' role for me!
Do you have a go-to activity to help you de-stress or relax?
I have a 'goof board' which is the closest I will get to surfing for a while. I get on it whenever I can between calls and in gaps of work.
What is your best tip for working remotely?
Be willing to video chat – I think it's important to see each other to stay connected.
What are you binge watching or listening to now that you have time?
After I come "home" from work, my wife and daughter and I are working through a list of movies.
