Making Remote Work at Baker Botts: Heather Choi
The COVID-19 pandemic is having far-reaching implications on many aspects of our lives – including where we work. As offices and other organizations across the country have closed, Heather Choi has found a way to make remote “work.”
How has the transition been to working at home? What have you noticed has been harder/easier?
I wasn't someone who worked from home very much in the past because I'm constantly distracted by household tasks. It's been more difficult to find a quiet place to focus, but I'm taking full advantage of the relaxed dress code.
Do you have any new 'co-workers' (roommates, partners, children, pets)?
My husband, my 2 kids (ages 6 and 3), and I spend the day learning/working together. The children have unionized. Their demands include frequent breaks, Cheeze-Its, and unlimited access to Disney+. The upside is that my new coworkers play less office pranks on me than my old ones.
Tell us about your new office space – what do you like better, or is there anything you miss?
The D.C. office is brand new, so there is a lot to miss! I'd say the biggest things are the Nespresso machine and my view. I spent an hour cleaning up my basement and setting up a mini office…. that I never use. I spend most of the day at the dining room table where I can work and supervise Zoom elementary school at the same time. I love not having a commute and the ability to take conference calls while on a walk in the neighborhood.
If you've taken on an 'teaching' role for your kids – what are some tips that have worked for you?
Both my first grader and preschooler are doing distance learning. My husband and I split duties, but it's still a lot to handle. One thing that has worked well with my oldest is to create a "To Do" "Doing" "Done" chart. We write the day's tasks (Math, Zoom meeting, Brush Teeth, etc.) on post-its and move them around throughout the day. And we have recess in the afternoons.
Do you have a go-to activity to help you de-stress or relax?
I'm excited to try the Virtual Vinyasa Yoga that the firm is offering. Also, wine.
What is your best tip for working remotely?
Stay flexible and accept that your productive times will come in chunks that may be outside of typical working hours.
What are you binge watching or listening to now that you have time?
I don't know if I actually DO have the time, but I've been watching Mr. Robot, the entire Harry Potter series, and the Real Housewives of New York.
