HOUSTON, February 25, 2020 – Baker Botts, a leading international law firm, has partnered with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to provide recently graduated litigators the opportunity to handle misdemeanor prosecutions on a part-time basis in the county’s courts.
The program allows civil litigation attorneys, working with the approval of their law firm and under the authority of the Harris County District Attorney, to volunteer as pro bono attorneys in the high-volume Justice of the Peace courts for one day a week for six months.
“We have enjoyed working with the Harris County DA in this important program,” said Baker Botts partner Kevin Jacobs. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our younger lawyers to gain valuable courtroom experience while providing a much-needed public service that helps ease the burden on our local prosecutors. It also will enable our junior lawyers to develop relationships with other attorneys and judges in the community.”
Mr. Jacobs and Baker Botts associate Kelly Hanen are spearheading the program for the firm.
Before they begin, the lawyers attend three day-long trainings: a trial skills boot camp, a docket management training and shadowing a prosecutor for a day.
“The program puts some of Houston’s best new lawyers in courtrooms to get trial experience while lightening the workload for prosecutors assigned to those courts, without costing taxpayers a dime,” said Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg. “Because the lawyers are employed by large law firms, there is no added cost for Harris County.”
