SAN FRANSICO, October 23, 2018 – Baker Botts L.L.P, a leading international law firm announced today, that on October 19, 2018, a San Francisco-based Baker Botts L.L.P. team, including lead trial counsel Wayne Stacy and Sarah Guske, secured a complete defense victory at the trial court-level on behalf of client Twilio Inc. in a suit brought against Twilio by competitor TeleSign Corporation (“TeleSign”). The victory ends Twilio’s three-year-long district court defense against the assertion of four patents in a suit that TeleSign had characterized as worth over $870 million.
The Northern District of California Court held that all of TeleSign’s asserted claims are invalid under 35 U.S.C. § 101 in its October 19th order granting Twilio’s motion for judgment on the pleadings. Twilio had previously defeated TeleSign’s request for a preliminary injunction seeking to prevent Twilio from selling many of its products.
“For three years, we have had the opportunity to represent Twilio in this patent case. We are thankful for the court’s decision and pleased to have been able to secure a successful result for our client,” said Wayne Stacy.
