Baker Botts’ Scott Partridge Named Chair of ABA Intellectual Property Law Section

HOUSTON, August 24, 2017 - Baker Botts L.L.P., an international law firm, proudly announces Partner Scott Partridge has assumed the role of Chair of Intellectual Property Law Section of the American Bar Association (ABA). Formerly Chair-Elect, Mr. Partridge automatically assumed the office of Section Chair at the close of the Section’s business meeting in August 2017 during the ABA annual meeting in New York. 

“Scott is well-suited for this position as he is regarded by peers and those in the business as one of the most proficient lawyers within the IP field,” said Bart Showalter, Department Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Department. “His prestigious background and broad regulatory experience will deliver real value to practicing lawyers as well as the profession overall given his mastery of the laws.” 

Mr. Partridge has a long record of service to the ABA. From 2016 to 2017, he was Chair-Elect of the ABA’s IP Law Section and a member of its Council since 2010. In 2016 through 2018, he served and continues to serve as a Member of the ABA Commission on Veterans’ Legal Services. He previously served on the ABA Board of Governors from 2007 to 2010, served on its Finance Committee and Chaired its Grants Committee. He has served in the ABA House of Delegates since 1999, which develops ABA policy. He also chaired the Section of Science and Technology Law and served on its Council for many years. He chaired the Finance Committee of the ABA Section Officers Conference and served on its Executive Committee in the early 2000’s. Over the years, he was appointed by various ABA Presidents to serve on various commissions, task forces and committees. He is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and Chairs the Texas Fellows. 

Mr. Partridge is currently a partner and former head of Baker Botts’ IP Department in its Houston and Washington, D.C., offices. He has extensive intellectual property law experience, concentrating on litigation involving patents, copyrights and trade secrets for technologies in the electrical, computer systems, telecommunications and mechanical fields. 

From 1969 through 1971, Mr. Partridge was a patent examiner in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and from 1972 to 1976 he was employed as an international and legislative specialist for the Office of Legislation and International Affairs of the Patent and Trademark Office. In 1973 and 1974 he served as executive secretary of the U.S. Side of the Joint Working Group on Intellectual Property for the U.S./U.S.S.R. Agreements on Scientific Cooperation. He was the assistant deputy general counsel and section director for the United States Presidential Clemency Board in 1975. 

Mr. Partridge has served several leadership positions outside of his firm and the ABA. Among those positions was serving as President of the ITC Trial Lawyers Association and serving on it’s Executive Committee for many years. He is a frequent lecturer on intellectual property law and has addressed many audiences (both in the United States and internationally) regarding intellectual property law issues. For seven years, he taught intellectual property law as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center
