Wayne Stacy Named Intellectual Property Trailblazer

SAN FRANCISCO, July 10, 2017 - Baker Botts L.LP., a leading international law firm, is pleased to announce Partner Wayne Stacy, Intellectual Property (IP) Department Chair in the firm’s San Francisco office, has been named to The National Law Journal’s list of Intellectual Property Trailblazers. Top lawyers recognized on the annual list have “achieved remarkable successes” and continue to “make their mark” in the areas of patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret law.

A first-chair trial lawyer and ‘renowned patent litigator,’ Mr. Stacy is a rising leader in the patent industry from his litigation successes, to authoring leading publications, to teaching courses as adjunct professor in multiple law schools on nearly all areas of IP, including patent law, patent litigation, and copyright law. He is a skilled trial lawyer that has tried cases in both Federal courts around the country and at the Patent Trials and Appeal Board.

Inside Counsel describes Mr. Stacy as one of the few next-generation IP trial lawyers who combines courtroom skills with a strong technology background. Since he specializes in trial-bound cases and, in particular, in competitor-against-competitor IP litigations where injunctions and large damages are at issue, he stands out in a legal world dominated by IP cases that don't often go to trial. In addition to representing clients before the PTAB, he has tried cases in leading patent jurisdictions such as the Northern District of California and the Eastern District of Texas.

Mr. Stacy has lectured across the U.S. and around the world on the realities of jury trials in IP cases. He co-founded the Intellectual Property & Technology Institute, one of the country's largest live IP training events for more than 14 years. And earlier this year, he co-authored the PTAB Digest Deskbook, published by Lexis Nexis, which highlights the intersection between Patent Office litigation and Federal court litigation that arose after the passage of the America Invents Act.

With over 180 IP lawyers and patent professionals, holding over 200 technical degrees, Baker Botts has an incredibly deep bench of practitioners with a wealth of experience in patent litigation, patent prosecution and post-grant proceedings. Baker Botts’ IP practice also authors the PTAB Trials Blog, which provides a unique perspective on news, trends and analysis of PTAB proceedings as they evolve, including IPRs, CBMRs, and post-grant reviews (PGRs), and the wide-ranging impact the proceedings have on the patent litigation landscape.
