Baker Botts Lawyers Comment on Cyber Security and the Looming Impact of GDPR

Media Alert
DUBAI, 25 May, 2017 - Baker Botts L.L.P., an international law firm, and the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Middle East, is co-hosting a panel session, “Cyber Security and the looming impact of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),” at Baker Botts’ offices in Dubai on Monday, 29 May, 2017.

Corporate leaders can no longer afford to ignore the rising importance of cyber security, data protection and compliance. A number of high-profile and well-publicised cyber security incidents are increasingly focusing attention on a whole new world of risk; companies may face widespread corporate disruption, incur significant financial losses and suffer reputational damage, as a result of data breaches and critical infrastructure downtime.

In the Middle East, companies need to be aware of the GDPR, and must review their internal compliance procedures to ensure “data protection by design”. The GDPR comes into force in May 2018, and will fundamentally alter the data privacy landscape in the European Economic Area (EEA). GDPR will have extra-territorial effect and will apply to any organization which has operations in the EEA. Organizations found responsible for serious breaches can suffer penalties as high as 4% of global annual turnover.
The expert panel will examine the steps that companies can take to address and mitigate the risks of cyber-attacks:
  • Effective legal strategies to mitigate risk
  • Legal duties of directors and officers
  • The impact of the new General Data Protection Regulation

Baker Botts’ lawyers, Abdullah Mutawi (Corporate), and Neil Coulson (Intellectual Property), are available to discuss how companies should prepare for the risks associated with cyber-attacks and the potential impact of GDPR.
