Baker Botts Welcomes Veteran Litigator and ITC Expert

WASHINGTON, September 20, 2016 - Baker Botts, a leading international law firm, today announced that patent trial lawyer Lisa Kattan has joined the firm’s Intellectual Property practice group as a partner based in the Washington D.C. office.

“Lisa has served as the lead attorney on behalf of the U.S. Government in a number of high profile patent litigation cases covering a wide range of technologies. This experience will serve as a real benefit for our clients,” said Andrew M. Baker, Managing Partner of Baker Botts.

Ms. Kattan’s litigation and intellectual property law counseling is based upon her 17 years of experience both in private practice and at the International Trade Commission’s Office of Unfair Import Investigations (OUII). As a Senior Investigative Attorney in the OUII for over five years Ms. Kattan successfully applied her years of litigation experience with a hands-on approach to each investigation.

At the ITC, Ms. Kattan took numerous investigations through trial, most in the high-tech industry, including several high-profile cases during the smartphone wars. As the lead attorney in those investigations, Ms. Kattan evaluated the merits of patent infringement claims and defenses, proposed claim constructions, investigated public interest issues and ensured compliance with agency regulations. In addition, Ms. Kattan prepared all oral arguments at trial and Markman hearings while examining countless fact and expert witnesses at trial and in depositions over her tenure at the ITC.

“Lisa is a widely-respected lawyer with a wealth of experience in appearing before the ITC and district courts with regard to complex IP issues and will be able to provide our clients with outstanding advice and counsel,” said Bart Showalter, Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property practice group. “With 180 lawyers and over 200 technical degrees Baker Botts has one of the largest and most robust IP practices. Lisa is a superb addition to our group,” added Mr. Showalter.

Ms. Kattan received her undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota and her master’s degree from the University of Minnesota. She has a law degree from Northwestern University School of Law. She is admitted to practice in Illinois, the District of Columbia and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
