HOUSTON, July 12, 2016 - Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international law firm, announced today that one of the firm’s cases, Janvey v. Maldonado, was selected seventh overall, and first in the Securities category, on Texas Lawyer’s Top Verdicts and Settlements of 2015 list.
The firm represents Ralph S. Janvey, a court-appointed receiver tasked with recovering assets in connection with R. Allen Stanford’s multi-billion dollar Ponzi scheme.
In the Janvey v. Maldonado case, the Receiver asserted that former Stanford Financial Group Treasury Manager Patricia Maldonado had breached her fiduciary duties to Stanford International Bank, Ltd. in connection with the handling of funds deposited by Stanford customers. Following a five-day trial, the jury found Ms. Maldonado liable for breach of fiduciary duty and awarded $50 million in damages. The Court later entered judgment on the verdict.
The Janvey v. Maldonado case has also been recognized by The National Law Journal on its list of Top 100 Verdicts of 2015 and by Texas Lawyer where lead trial partner Scott Powers was listed as its “Litigator of the Week” in December 2015.
The Baker Botts trial team in the Maldonado case was led by: Scott Powers (Partner, Austin); Ryan Bangert (Partner, Dallas); and Stephanie Cagniart (Associate, Austin). Kevin Sadler (Partner, Palo Alto) serves as the Receiver’s lead counsel in the Stanford Receivership.
