HOUSTON, May 23, 2016 - Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international law firm, announced today that one of the firm’s cases was selected for The National Law Journal’s Top 100 Verdicts of 2015.
Baker Botts landed 36th on the list of the top 2015 verdicts, for the Litigation department’s work in federal court in Dallas, Texas, in the Janvey v. Maldonado case.
The firm represents Ralph S. Janvey, a court-appointed receiver tasked with recovering assets in connection with R. Allen Stanford’s multi-billion dollar Ponzi scheme. In the Janvey v. Maldonado case, the Receiver asserted that former Stanford Financial Group Treasury Manager Patricia Maldonado had breached her fiduciary duties to Stanford International Bank, Ltd. in connection with the handling of funds deposited by Stanford customers. Following a five-day trial, the jury found Ms. Maldonado liable for breach of fiduciary duty and awarded $50 million in damages. The Court later entered judgment on the verdict.
The Baker Botts trial team in the Maldonado case was led by: Scott Powers (Partner, Austin) and Ryan Bangert (Partner, Dallas). Kevin Sadler (Partner, Palo Alto) serves as the Receiver’s lead counsel in the Stanford Receivership.
