Baker Botts Bolsters IP Practice in London

LONDON, January 12, 2015 - Baker Botts LLP, a leading international law firm, announced today that Mark Heaney has joined the firm’s London office as a partner in the Intellectual Property Group.

We are delighted that Mark is joining us as we continue the growth of our London office in 2015,” said Baker Botts Managing Partner Andrew M. Baker. “Adding an IP lawyer of his caliber is a natural extension of our strength as a market-leading telecommunications and computer science practice in the U.S.,” added Mr. Baker.

Mr. Heaney joins the firm from Bird & Bird, where he was a partner in the Intellectual Property Group, and served as head of the International Electronics Sector Group. He specializes in contentious matters and his practice covers a broad range of intellectual property work with a focus on patents, copyright and related rights.

“Mark is a terrific addition, with a well-earned reputation for creatively helping companies protect, manage and monetize their IP assets,” said Bart Showalter, firmwide chair of the Intellectual Property Department of Baker Botts. “His wide-ranging experience with a variety of advanced technologies and strong track record of successes defending patent and copyright cases position him as a key resource to our clients across a broad spectrum of industries.”

Mr. Heaney has been involved in a large number of computer and electronics related matters including Microsoft v Motorola (a patent matter relating to the synchronization of data on multiple devices), LG Electronics v Sony (patents relating to Blu-ray, flat screen and HDMI technologies), HTC v Nokia (GSM and UMTS patents), SanDisk v Kingston (USB flash memory devices) and Halliburton v Smith International (the mathematical modelling of designs for petroleum drill bits).

He has advised on a wide range of other technologies including data grooming on telecommunications landlines, RAID disk storage, microprocessors, internet routers, all aspects of mobile telephony, artificial intelligence, digital television security, ADSL/VDSL broadband and printing techniques.

“As our IP practice expands, it will look for the kind of experience and know-how that Mark brings to the table. His abilities are a great fit for the practice and firm, and will allow us to expand our services in a strategic way around the globe,” said Steven Wardlaw, Partner-in-Charge of Baker Botts’ London office.

Mr. Heaney has a BSc in Computer Science and was employed as a software and electronic engineer before qualifying as a solicitor in 1998.
