Appellate Law360 Q&A Features Baker Botts Partner Aaron Streett

HOUSTON, April 8, 2013
-- In responding to a question posed by Appellate Law360 editors recently, Baker Botts litigation partner Aaron Streett described an early career mistake that he was able to turn into a lesson learned.

“As a young appellate lawyer, I sometimes isolated myself upon receiving an appellate file,” Streett told Appellate Law360. “I poured over the cold record and the law, trying to view the case strictly from the same perspective as the appellate judges later would. As I matured, I realized I was largely neglecting a terrific resource — spending significant time with the trial lawyers who had handled the case below.”

“These conversations enabled me to better understand the full story of the case, in a way that was not necessarily apparent from the cold record,” Streett added. “While I still try to look at appeals from the judges’ perspective, I am now better armed to inform those judges about how to understand parts of the record and proceedings below through the eyes of my client.”

In addition to discussing this early career mistake that he successfully turned into a lesson learned in the Appellate Law360 feature, Streett responded to questions concerning the most challenging case he has worked on, an aspect of his practice area that is in need of reform, a key case in the Appellate sector and a lawyer who made a lasting impression on him.
