In highlighting the firm’s litigation achievements, American Lawyer editors wrote:
“Baker Botts litigators achieved impressive results in the past two years, including the reversal of a $1.58 billion verdict against Morgan Stanley. But our eyes were drawn to two firsts. In the first Alien Tort Claims Act case against a U.S.-based company to go to trial, the firm won a July 2007 verdict for Drummond Company, Inc., which had been accused by a human rights group of collaborating with paramilitaries that assassinated union leaders working at the company’s Colombian coal mine. Baker Botts also represented Mark Dimitroff, a clinical laboratory marketing executive charged in a conspiracy to violate a federal Medicare antikickback statute.... Using the government’s own reports as evidence, [the firm] persuaded an Oklahoma jury to return a not guilty verdict.”
Baker Botts was also noted for its work as co-counsel with Fulbright on the Merck matters in Texas.
American Lawyer invited the Top 200 AmLaw firms to participate. In August 2007, the firm submitted 32 cases (active between January 2006 and July 2007) for consideration to American Lawyer, in categories Pre-Trial Achievements, Trial Achievements, Appellate Achievements, Arbitrations, Settlements, Other, and Pro-Bono. Our submission included work in Energy Litigation, Pharmaceutical Litigation, International Dispute Resolution, Intellectual Property Litigation, Labor & Employment Litigation, Securities Litigation and Appellate.
