Former Chief Justice of Texas Supreme Court Joins Baker Botts


Austin, September 9, 2005 -- Thomas R. Phillips, who served for nearly 17 years as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas, has joined the Firm as a partner. Phillips will focus on all aspects of litigation work, including appellate, trial, and various forms of alternative dispute resolution. While based in the Firm’s Austin office, Phillips will work with lawyers and clients throughout the Firm’s domestic offices.

Pihllips was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1987 by Governor Bill Clements. He was elected and re-elected as the state’s top jurist in 1988, 1990, 1996 and 2002. Phillips presided over an historic transformation of the court and was widely credited with restoring the court’s reputation for scholarship and balance.
