The second annual Baker Botts Board of Directors Forum will take place on Thursday, January 17th at The Post Oak Hotel in Houston, Texas. This is a half­-day event that will address hot topics and critical issues affecting boards and corporate directors in 2019. Discussion will include hot topics in M&A and governance hitting the news headlines of 2018; an interactive case study based upon the rise and staggering fall of Theranos; and the pressing challenges of growing and maintaining ethical board rooms.

The media environment continues to evolve in sometimes unanticipated ways that 
impact the business community and the political arena. Our keynote lunch 
presentation will be a panel discussion with prominent journalists discussing the 
media’s role with, and influence upon, corporate strategy, economic policy and 
political discourse. Participating in this discussion will be:

  • Mimi Swartz – Executive editor of Texas Monthly, contributing op­ed writer 
    for The New York Times, author of various books including Ticker: The Quest 
    to Develop an Artificial Heart and Power Failure: The Inside Story of the 
    Collapse of Enron.
  • David Marcus – Senior writer focusing on legal issues raised by corporate 
    transactions at The Street, The Deal  and Corporate Control Alert.
  • Liam Denning – Bloomberg opinion columnist covering energy, mining and 
    commodities, previously editor of the Heard on the Street column in The Wall 
    Street Journal.
  • Hedrick Smith – Pulitzer Prize­winning former reporter and editor for The 
    New York Times, producer/correspondent for PBS Frontline, author of various 
    books, including Who Stole the American Dream?, Rethinking America, and the 
    best­seller, The Russians.
