LNG: A Bridge To … Where?

External Article

Baker Botts Senior Counsel Steven Miles examines the building confluence of risks facing the LNG industry in his recent publication “LNG: A Bridge To … Where?”.

Key insights include:

  • The U.S. government may ban new LNG exports to China, regardless of who is in the White House. Steven explores the ramifications of such a possible ban.
  • The U.S. and other governments have issued a dizzying array of new climate change initiatives. Some may be reversed in a new administration, but many will likely stay in some form. Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAMs) in the E.U. and elsewhere will impose costs on some LNG producers. The cumulative impact of these rules, fees and taxes will affect LNG markets.
  • The U.S. DOE’s “Pause” in approving new LNG export applications will disappear under a new administration (whether Republican or Democratic), but to some extent the damage is already done. The aura of security of supply from U.S. exporters has been breached by a combination of factors, including the perceived ambivalence (or worse) by the government towards LNG.
