Overview

Matt Hilderbrand is a senior associate in the firm’s Austin office. His practice focuses on high-stakes, complex litigation in state and federal courts.

Matt serves clients in a variety of industries, tackling diverse and difficult subject matters to help clients put their best foot forward in resolving disputes. He has worked on matters involving a broad range of issues, including antitrust, class-action certification, constitutional questions, complex contracts, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the False Claims Act, post-merger issues, regulatory challenges, residential mortgage-backed securities, and securities litigation. His experience includes presenting oral argument; mediation; researching and drafting pleadings, motions, memoranda, and briefs; managing discovery in both small and large lawsuits; and working with clients to craft pretrial strategies to tee up issues for maximum impact on appeal.

Matt clerked for Judge Don R. Willett on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit; Judge Allison J. Rushing on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit; and Judge E. Grady Jolly on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. (Yes, that is more time than what one typically spends in law school and preparing for the bar exam combined.)

Originally from Hawaii, Matt received his J.D. from William & Mary Law School in Williamsburg, Virginia. There, he was a graduate research fellow at the Center for Legal & Court Technology and briefed matters as part of the school's Appellate & Supreme Court Clinic. At Baker Botts, Matt continues to explore how technology can help improve the practice of law and maintains an active pro-bono practice focusing on strategic appeals.
