Sonny Payne is an international arbitration and commercial disputes lawyer with a focus on disputes arising out of agreements concerning natural resource development and engineering projects. Sonny is dual qualified as a chartered civil engineer and, prior to becoming a lawyer, spent 15 years working as a professional consulting engineer on large scale engineering and industrial projects.
Mr. Payne has represented clients in international arbitration proceedings in Hong Kong, Singapore and throughout the Asia region. He also has substantial experience in representing clients in litigation before the Hong Kong courts. His experience encompasses a wide range of disputes, including disputes arising out of joint venture agreements to develop natural resources, large scale and complex building and engineering contracts, long-term distributorship agreements, shareholder agreements and financial instruments, such as loan agreements and convertible bonds.
Prior to joining the legal profession, Mr. Payne qualified as a chartered civil engineer and for over 15 years was employed by renowned international consulting engineering firms on the design or project/contract management of large scale engineering and building projects throughout the Asia Pacific region. With this background and skill set, Mr. Payne has represented and assisted a number of clients in the energy, engineering and infrastructure industries to draft and negotiate contract documentation involving various forms of project delivery, including turnkey, design and build and traditional employer design forms contractual arrangements. He has also acted as project counsel during the implementation of such projects, advising on such issues as variations, claims and supplemental agreements.
