Legal Times Names Baker Botts Partner a Leading Corporate Governance Lawyer

News Release

James R. Doty is one of the Washington, D.C. area’s top securities and corporate governance attorneys, according to Legal Times. The publication’s November 17, 2003 issue identified him as one of 10 Leading Lawyers in these practice areas. Mr. Doty is Co-Partner in Charge of the Baker Botts L.L.P. Washington office, head of that office’s corporate, SEC, regulatory and enforcement practice, and a member of the firm’s executive committee.

The Legal Times article refers to Mr. Doty as ‘the go-to guy for a big crisis.’ Over the past year, he has played a key role in some of the biggest changes in corporate America involving corporate accountability, the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley and the surge in internal corporate investigations. Of these, the Freddie Mac investigation is one of the highest profile matters. Mr. Doty, a former general counsel of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), is head of the internal investigation ordered by Freddie Mac’s board of directors. His team’s investigation resulted in a July 2003 report. Mr. Doty has since testified before congressional committees on the report’s findings.

‘Jim Doty knows more about corporate accountability than most lawyers could ever dream of learning. His dedication to his clients, to the legal profession and to Baker Botts are what makes him such an outstanding lawyer,’ says Baker Botts Managing Partner Walt Smith.

Mr. Doty is an active participant in The American Assembly, a non-profit/non-partisan project relating to the future of the U.S. accounting profession. Each year, Mr. Doty appears before the SEC’s International Institute for Securities Regulation. He also counsels boards of directors and audit committees on problems arising under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and related issues. He is a member of the American Law Institute and the United States Supreme Court Bar. Mr. Doty is also an active speaker at some of the nation’s top law schools, as well as the Practicing Law Institute, and he has published numerous articles on corporate accountability.
