Concentration White collar criminal defense, internal investigations, corporate compliance
Summary Mary Spearing concentrates on white collar criminal defense, internal investigations and corporate compliance. She has extensive experience with a wide variety of fraud issues centering on financial fraud, healthcare, securities and defense procurement, as well as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the Economic Espionage Act.
Prior to 1999, Ms. Spearing worked for the United States Department of Justice for 18 years, as an assistant U.S. attorney for several years trying criminal cases and most recently as the criminal chief of the Fraud Section, where she supervised a large staff of lawyers who investigated and prosecuted white collar crime throughout the country. She worked closely with major enforcement agencies, including the F.B.I., the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of the Treasury.
Since joining Baker Botts, in addition to acting as defense counsel in cases brought by the U.S. Justice Department involving insider trading, campaign finance, obstruction of justice and accounting fraud, among others, Ms. Spearing has also conducted numerous internal investigations for boards of directors and audit committees. A number of those investigations have involved violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in Asia, Africa, Europe and South America.
