First Grader Hannah Wetterau Creates 'The Umbrella Glove' - Earns Baker Botts L.L.P.'s Annual "Most Patentable Invention Award"
DALLAS, February 2, 2005 It took Hannah Wetterau, a first grader with Richardson I.S.D., to solve the age-old problem of how to get into a car during a rain storm without getting yourself and the car's interior soaking wet.
Wetterau, this year's recipient of the Baker Botts L.L.P. "Most Patentable Invention Award" at the Richardson I.S.D. Invention Convention, invented The Umbrella Glove to keep your arm dry upon entering your car in a rainstorm.
Similar to an arm of a jacket, The Umbrella Glove covers the entire arm and is versatile in that it can be converted into an umbrella tote when turned inside-out. The versatile tote holds the soaked umbrella while ensuring that your arm and interior of the car remain dry as you place the umbrella in the car.
The Umbrella Glove was one of 5000 entries in the annual Invention Convention competition that is open to all students in the Richardson Independent School District, grades kindergarten through high school. Students in the competition invent, build and create marketing plans to commercialize their ideas.
For more than 10 years, attorneys from Baker Botts have selected one promising entry and attempted to patent the invention. As the recipient of this year's award, Wetterau will work closely with intellectual property attorneys in the firm's Dallas office to draft, file and prosecute a patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Washington, D.C. The award sponsored by Baker Botts LLP covers the fees and costs associated with this effort.
Baker Botts' attorneys facilitate the patent application process that involves submitting drawings, diagrams, a comprehensive description of the invention and a set of claims that describe the unique aspects of the invention. If the application is successful, the patent term will continue for 20 years from the date of filing. Baker Botts has assisted four children receive patents for their inventions.
"Every year, we are always extremely impressed with the inventions the students create," said Baker Botts' partner Bart Showalter, who has helped select the most patentable invention for the past several years. "One of the messages we hope to convey in our participation with the Invention Convention is that everyone has good ideas and can be an inventor."
Baker Botts is also active in educating youth by other means through the Dallas Independent School District Partners in Education program.
