Legal Translator 

The Role:

A position requiring the provision of a wide-range of legal translation services to clients in various industries worldwide.

General Duties:

  • Reporting to the Chief Translator
  • Translating documents from Chinese into English and vice versa, including word-processing, proofreading, editing and vetting
  • Working with the Chief Translator and other legal staff on assignments given by lawyers
  • Working overtime as and when required
  • Meeting translation deadlines in all cases

Requirements:

  • B.A. or higher in translation/linguistics/law
  • At least 4-5 years’ practical experience working as a legal translator in an international law firm
  • Able to perform on-screen translation, i.e. directly on the computer, and have good working knowledge of the Windows/Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) software and good English and Chinese typing skills, with accuracy and speed
  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision, fast and accurate, have an eye for details, willing to work overtime, able to provide interpretation service will be an asset

All candidates will be required to go through a test of his/her translation skills (Chinese into English and vice versa) directly on the computer, about 30-45 minutes.

Beijing
Payroll Specialist 

We are currently seeking a Payroll Specialist whose responsibility will be to ensure that employees and partners in domestic and international offices are compensated in an accurate and timely manner and in compliance with all applicable payroll and tax laws. This is a firmwide position, resident in our Houston Office.

Responsibilities:

Domestic Payroll Processing

  • Prepare payroll for employees in domestic offices on a semi-monthly basis. Maintain and audit employee direct deposit and tax form information in PeopleSoft. Enter any necessary earning or deduction adjustments directly to employee pay line.
  • Import employee soft cost data via interface between WinBIS and PeopleSoft
  • Import non-exempt employee exception time and part-timer actual time via interface from RollCall to PeopleSoft Audit all imports to ascertain proper earnings and deduction information was loaded
  • Audit payroll tasks performed by other payroll staff
  • Prepare and transmit payroll check data electronically to Bank to verify check authenticity and authorize payment
  • Print direct deposit advices and checks for all employee’s on U.S. payroll
  • Generate and manually manipulate various processes and reports from PeopleSoft to ensure each advice and check are routed to the appropriate office
  • Prepare data file from PeopleSoft to Redwood Analytics for payroll expense reporting purposes. Additionally, monthly reports providing new hire, terminations and timekeeper information is transmitted to Redwood.

International Payroll Processing - Responsible for the manual preparation, audit and documentation of the firm’s international payroll

  • Prepare appropriate spreadsheets for seven international offices
  • Enter data into PeopleSoft and update accumulators
  • Communicate with offices and verify all data
  • Authorize and record funding
  • Create appropriate GL entries
  • Miscellaneous payroll tasks

Tax Filing

  • Oversee tax filing with third party vendor, insuring we are compliant with all tax laws
  • Ensure we are registered in every tax location in which the firm does business or an employee resides

Partner Accounts

  • Enter and transmit all daily and monthly partner draw activity via Electronic Funds Transfer or wire transfer
  • Enter and maintain bank account and repetitive draw requests in various software programs for transfer of funds as well as notification to partners following successful completion of transfer

Miscellaneous

  • Preparation of all monthly non-U.S. payroll and maintain employee banking information in software system used to transfer the funds as well as notify the employee of transfer
  • Primary entry of all firm wire transfers

Skills and Abilities:

Required

  • High School diploma required; some college is preferred
  • Minimum of five years experience with in-house payroll processing, 3 years of which must be experience with the PeopleSoft Payroll module
  • Strong computer/data entry skills
  • Intermediate knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, including strong Excel skills
  • 10-key by touch skills
  • Ability to answer telephones and respond to partners and all employees in a professional and courteous manner
  • Adaptable to change; able to “shift gears” as priorities change
  • Ability to produce neat, accurate work
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information seen or heard within the workplace
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Must be able to work 7.5 hours, 5 days per week, consistently

Preferred

  • Knowledge PeopleSoft Benefits Administration module strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of Elite Financial Software also preferred
  • Experience in law firm or other professional services firm is preferred

Scientific Advisor 

We are seeking a Scientific Advisor for our NY office’s Intellectual Property Practice - candidates must have some level of familiarity with organic chemistry. Technical prerequisites: PhD in Organic Chemistry (M.S. in Organic Chemistry with 3+ years of industry experience may also be considered) or PhD in Molecular Biology or Immunology (M.S. in Molecular Biology or Immunology with 3+ years of industry experience may also be considered). Chemistry candidates should be familiar with organic chemical nomenclature and methods for synthesizing organic molecules and should have a functional knowledge of organic structures. Biology candidates should be familiar with antibody technologies, recombinant DNA technologies, protein biochemistry and therapeutic biologics.

Candidates who are not currently admitted to the United States Patent & Trademark Office will be considered; however, the ideal candidate will need to take the necessary steps to become Patent Bar admitted in a timely manner. Additionally, it is a requirement of the Firm that the candidate will work full-time in the scientific advisor role, and within one year of employment at the firm be enrolled in a local law school on a part-time basis in the evening.
