At Baker Botts, we believe that good corporate citizenship includes supporting supplier diversity efforts to create sustainable economic development in the communities where we live and work. A robust supplier diversity initiative has been a core component of our diversity program. Each year we strive to expand the breadth and magnitude of our investment with diverse suppliers. We currently do business with roughly 100 W/MBEs.
To support our supplier diversity program, we are affiliated with key national supplier diversity organizations. We are corporate members of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, the premier organization linking corporations to over 15,000 minority suppliers, and its regional affiliates, including the NY/NJ Minority Supplier Development Council, the MD/DC Minority Supplier Development Council and the Houston Minority Business Council. We are also corporate members of the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the leading organization certifying women-owned businesses, and its affiliates in New York, the District of Columbia and Texas.
In addition to membership in these national and local organizations, we also maintain our own database, which includes more than 700 W/MBEs, and is growing daily. Our database of registered diverse suppliers is one of the first places our employees look for qualified vendors. If you are a W/MBE interested in doing business with Baker Botts, registering as a diverse supplier is an important step toward establishing a relationship with us. To be included in our Supplier Diversity Initiative, we require independent third-party certification for our U.S.-based companies. Baker Botts encourages minority and women vendors to be certified by the Women's Business Enterprise National Council or the National Minority Supplier Development Council, or through their regional partners and affiliates. On a case-by-case basis, we may also consider other certifications that meet the nationally recognized certification standards of at least 51 percent ownership and management and control by minority and/or women group members.
