About Baker Botts
Invention Convention
Baker Botts has one of the most sophisticated and creative intellectual property legal departments in the United States, so it is only fitting that we also have one of the most creative intellectual property pro bono projects in the country.

Invention Convention is a competitive event sponsored by the Richardson Independent School District, where students from kindergarten through high school create and construct an invention, along with a marketing plan to sell the invention. Since 1991, Baker Botts has sponsored and judged the contest. Our lawyers then work on a pro bono basis with the winner of the convention's "Most Patentable Invention Award" to file a patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Baker Botts pays all expenses to prepare and follow through on the patent application. A recent winner in the competition was a third grader from Moss Haven Elementary in Dallas, who invented an Automatic Closet System connected to an outdoor thermometer to signal the appropriate clothing for the day's temperature by turning on a red, white or blue light matching the colors of the clothes hangers inside the closets.
