In 2004, Baker Botts established a firmwide Diversity Committee, which is charged with overseeing the firm's diversity efforts to recruit, retain, and develop women and minority attorneys, and promote diversity. The Diversity Committee is comprised of a diverse group of partners, counsel, and associates from each domestic office, including the Managing Partner and one other member of the firm's Executive Committee. The members of the committee share a strong commitment to increasing the firm's diversity, and they use their unique experiences and varied backgrounds to support and further that goal. Each member of the committee focuses on a specific issue, such as recruitment, retention, professional development, training, external and internal communications, and sponsorships.
In July 2005, the Diversity Committee commissioned a comprehensive diversity needs assessment of the firm. The assessment was conducted by a national diversity expert. Following the comprehensive assessment, Baker Botts adopted a Diversity Strategic Action Plan to identify and eliminate barriers to the success of diversity within the firm. The Strategic Action Plan requires that the Diversity Committee set annual goals relating to the firm's diversity initiatives and publish an annual report on the firm's progress towards those objectives. The annual report is provided to all attorneys and staff, and made available to clients. The members of our Diversity Committee are:
Walt Smith Managing Partner, Houston
Joe Caldwell, Chair Partner, Washington
Craig Adams Hiring Partner, Dallas
Demitrius Anthony Associate, Washington
Keiko Ichiye Special Counsel, Dallas
Sylvia James Diversity Counsel, Washington
Jack Kinzie Partner in Charge, Dallas
